Frequently Asked Questions
Can I be in band and sports? Yes, the band directors and coaches work together to share kids and help them be involved and successful in all of their activities.
Can I take AP Classes and band? Yes, in fact 80% of our band
students are in AP classes. The last four years, every graduating senior that is in band earned scholarship money to major universities across the country. Oñate also has the highest graduation rate of all the high schools in LCPS and ranks one of the top in the state of New Mexico. OHS Band Directors hold their students to high academic standards.
Does Marching Band Count as a PE Credit? Yes, 12 weeks of
marching band for a PE credit is much better than dressing out for PE for an entire semester.
Can I check out an instrument for the summer before band starts? Yes, all you have to do is communicate with the directors by emailing them at email@example.com.
Can I change instruments? Yes, just communicate with the band
directors. We are very flexible and we also start students on guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, and piano.
Can I be in band, orchestra, choir and theatre. Yes, the music department works together with all of our students.
I’ve missed some dates, is it too late to start band? No, the
band directors and staff will get you caught up. No stress.

Students from the Oñate High School Music Program Chosen to Participate in the New Mexico All State Festivals
Fifteen students were chosen for the All State Bands, 12 students for the All State Choirs, 9 for the All State Jazz Bands, and 1 for the All State Orchestra.
Students auditioned in October & November at New Mexico State University as well as other parts of the state. Auditions consisted of pieces chosen by the New Mexico Music Educators
Association & New Mexico Jazz Educators association, as well as scales and sight-reading. The process of auditioning privately is very challenging and nerve-racking. Many of these kids say it is the hardest thing they’ve ever done.
More than 1,100 students from around New Mexico auditioned for 300 wind and percussion spots in the band. The All State Conference will be January 7- 10 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. The final performance will be Saturday afternoon, January 10 at UNM’s Popejoy Hall.
All State Jazz Bands will perform at the NMJE All State Jazz weekend hosted at New Mexico State University January 23-25, 2015.

Class Fees and Financial Responsibilities
As you know every good program requires a financial responsibility in order to maintain success. Students of the band are the ambassadors of the entire Oñate High School. In order to function as a program, we must require a financial responsibility. There are 3 basic fees that your child will be responsible for throughout the year. We divide them this way for ease of understanding.
Student Necessities-Shirts, Hats, Shoes etc. meaning if they wear it, they buy it. These funds cannot be fundraised.
Class Fees-are established to help fund the general budget of the band. These fees are for music, staff, transportation, equipment, materials, etc.
Fundraised Monies-every student is expected to fundraise above and beyond in order to help support the general fund of the band. The more we fundraise the more we can do as a group, which betters the experience for the entire band.
Details may be found by clicking here: Student Fees or by accessing the Downloads page..
The Oñate Royal Knight Regiment 2014-2015 Schedule of Events can be found here or on the Downloads page. As always, fundraising is very important and necessary for the RKR Band to function, so please make note of the fundraising dates on the 2nd page. The dates have been added to the events calendar.
